Focus Group Discussion (FGD): reviewing the progress of industrial decarbonization towards the 2050 Net Zero Emissions (NZE) target

Jakarta, March 4, 2026 – The Indonesian Cement Association (ASPERSSI) held a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) with members of the national cement industry to review the progress of the industry’s decarbonization journey towards the 2050 Net Zero Emissions (NZE) target.

The discussion covered various developments in the evolving policy landscape, including sustainable finance taxonomy and carbon pricing mechanisms. In addition, the forum also reviewed the cement industry’s decarbonization roadmap and the progress made by member companies.

In recent years, member companies have continued to promote various concrete initiatives, including through increased energy efficiency, reduced clinker factor, increased use of alternative fuels and raw materials, and the development of low-carbon cement products. These collective efforts have contributed to a significant reduction in the CO₂ emission intensity of the cement industry over the past decade.

On the other hand, the discussion also highlighted a number of challenges still faced by the industry, including limited availability of biomass and alternative fuels, the need for clearer biomass pricing mechanisms, licensing constraints in the development of renewable energy such as solar panel installations, and the importance of expanding the use of green cement in government infrastructure projects.

The industry also emphasized the importance of policy support and incentives from the government, as has been implemented in various other countries, to accelerate green investment. In addition, simplifying the licensing process, including in the management of hazardous waste, is also considered important to support the implementation of co-processing and the strengthening of circular economy initiatives.

ASPERSSI expressed its appreciation to all members of the cement industry for their strong commitment and continued progress in implementing decarbonization actions. With continued collaboration between industry, government, and various stakeholders, it is hoped that the targets set out in the cement industry decarbonization roadmap can be achieved and make a real contribution to efforts to tackle climate change in Indonesia.
