ASPERSSI Chair Speaks at Global Meeting on Cement Decarbonization

India, March 10–12, 2026 – The Chair of ASPERSSI served as a speaker at the Global Cement Decarbonization Convening, organized by TERI – The Energy and Resources Institute and supported by the Global Cement and Concrete Association (GCCA).

In the session “Regional Realities: Where Cement Decarbonization Stands Today,” the ASPERSSI Chair had the opportunity to present Indonesia’s progress and challenges in advancing the cement industry’s decarbonization agenda. The session also featured speakers from the GCCA, Thailand, Vietnam, and India, who provided updates on the status of cement and concrete decarbonization at the global level.

One key takeaway from the discussions and breakout sessions was that many countries are pursuing similar mitigation efforts, such as increasing the use of alternative fuels, reducing the clinker factor through the use of supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs), improving energy efficiency, and developing innovative technologies.

Despite differences in national contexts, many countries face the same structural challenges, including technological readiness, policy harmonization, financing for low-carbon investments, the need for incentive systems or carbon pricing strategies, and ensuring market demand for low-carbon cement.

Another key topic is Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS). Although recognized as a crucial technology for deep decarbonization, most countries are still in the exploratory or pilot phase, given its high costs and the fact that its economic viability has not yet been demonstrated on a large scale.

This initiative underscores that the decarbonization of the cement industry is a global challenge requiring collaboration across nations, industries, and institutions.
